Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile - 18 November 2024.

In a historic achievement, Puerto Natales has been named Culinary Capital of the World Food Tourism Association (WFTA), becoming the first destination in Chile and the fourth in the world to receive this prestigious title. This recognition places Puerto Natales on the international gastronomic map, meeting the high standards sought by food and drink lovers.

A Gastronomic Journey of More Than Two Decades

The Última Esperanza Chamber of Tourism, representing the tourism and gastronomic sectors of the region, led the application to the WFTA Culinary Capitals Programme. Adriana Aguilar, manager of the Chamber, expressed her pride in this achievement:

"For more than 20 years, Puerto Natales has cultivated a rich gastronomic identity that enhances our attractiveness as a tourist destination. Applying to the Culinary Capitals programme was a natural step, which has now confirmed our place among the world's gastronomic destinations. We are delighted and proud", highlighted.

Why Puerto Natales?

Located in the Magallanes Region of Chile, Puerto Natales is nourished by the stunning Patagonian landscape of mountains, pampas, fjords and canals. Its culinary heritage is deeply influenced by these natural elements, with a strong commitment to food sovereignty and sustainability.

A Boost to Local Economy and Global Visibility

Dalma Diaz Pinto, WFTA Ambassador in Chile, underlined the economic and cultural impact of this designation:

"The Culinary Capitals programme provides an impartial audit of a destination's culinary culture and its readiness to attract culinary travellers. These travellers tend to contribute, on average, 25% more to the local economy than traditional tourists. We warmly welcome Puerto Natales to our international network", indicated.

This recognition brings numerous benefits, such as increased global visibility, longer tourism seasons and higher value visitors. It also fosters community pride and cross-sector partnerships, creating opportunities for local businesses and strengthening international connections.

Part of a Global Network of Culinary Capitals

Established in 2021, the WFTA Culinary Capitals programme seeks to highlight lesser-known destinations with a rich culinary offering. Puerto Natales now joins Granada (Spain), Bonaire and Cuenca (Ecuador) as one of the four Culinary Capitals of the world.
