The National Association of Agronomists and Oenologists (ANIAE) announces for this year 2026 the ninth version of the Carmenère al Mundo competition.

This edition, which will also mark 20 years since the event was first held, will take place in the Curicó Valley during the month of November.

Carmenère al Mundo is a competition organised by ANIAE every two years. It was born in 2006 from the decision to celebrate Chilean wine through the Carmenère variety, when a group of directors of the guild had the idea of holding the first wine competition organised by winemakers, following the highest international standards.

His intention was to open a window on the great diversity and versatility of Chilean wine by showing the world, through Carmenère, the very high technical level of the national wine industry.

In addition to being the only competition in Chile organised by oenologists, it was the first competition in the country to obtain the patronage of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and the International Union of Oenologists (UIOE).

Carmenère au Monde is made according to the OIV regulations, This means that the majority of the jury members will be oenologists and of foreign origin. The jurors will also be professionals from different segments of the industry, so that each one can contribute with their own perspective.

The president of ANIAE, Manuela Astaburuaga, notes that the organisation is concerned that, throughout the competition, the wine is the protagonist, from the reception of the samples, their anonymisation, the optimal conditions for the tasting, such as temperature, silence, odour-free environment, among others.

For this ninth edition, the organising committee invited the academic and director of ANIAE Philippo Pszczólkowski. About the invitation to be president of Carmenère au Monde 2026, he says: “I was very surprised and it took me a few days to give them my answer. I consider it an honour and a great kindness on the part of the organising committee. I will do everything I can to help make the competition a success.”

In addition to quality, the competition seeks to reward the diversity of the samples, which is why samples from other countries are now also accepted. Philippo adds that “the evolution of the competition has been interesting, given that it started with Carmenère wines only, but today it has incorporated blends with other varieties”.”

Regarding the choice of the host valley, Manuela explains that “from the beginning, Carmenère al Mundo was conceived as a travelling competition, which would travel to the main valleys where Carmenère is grown in Chile. The last time this contest was held in the Curicó Valley was in 2016, so we thought it was time to take it back to that area.”

Carmenère al Mundo 2026 will be the opportunity to showcase the growth and innovation that the Curicó Valley has experienced in these 10 years. Moreover, this valley is part of the Maule Region, where the largest area of vineyards in the country is located, and 34% of the hectares of Carmenère planted in Chile are in this region.

The organising committee expects to receive a great diversity of labels, from different origins, at the 2026 edition of Carmenère al Mundo, which will be an excellent opportunity to highlight the industry's potential around Chile's flagship variety. ANIAE will soon be able to disseminate more details about the competition.
