In an emotional ceremony held this Thursday in an extraordinary session of the Municipal Council, the Illustrious Municipality of Curicó presented the Keys to the City to Miguel A. Torres, in recognition of his outstanding career and historic contribution to the development of the commune.

This is a milestone of particular relevance, being only the second time in the city's history that this distinction has been awarded, reflecting the mark that the work of the renowned Spanish oenologist has left on the territory over decades.

A pioneer and key figure in the modernisation and international expansion of the sector, the president of Torres Family He was also honoured for his undeniable heritage and his impact on the global positioning of Chilean wine.

A legacy that transformed the valley

The arrival of Miguel A. Torres Curicó marked a turning point in the local wine-growing history. Under his leadership, international quality standards, technological innovation – such as the introduction of stainless steel vats – and a modern business vision were incorporated, which also contributed to positioning Chile on the global wine stage.

Your contribution has been sustained over time, not only in terms of production but also through job creation, human capital development, knowledge transfer, and strengthening the wine-growing ecosystem of the valley.

added to this is their role in driving initiatives that are now part of Curicó's identity and tradition, such as the Curicó Grape Harvest Festival, the oldest in Chile, consolidating a deep bond between industry, community, and territory.

Local recognition with global projection

Internationally, Miguel A. Torres has been widely recognised for his business leadership and commitment to sustainability. Among his most significant awards are the Creu Sant Jordi 2026 granted by the Government of Catalonia, the Order of Bernardo O’Higgins awarded by the Chilean Government in 1996, and his inclusion among the 100 Climate Action Leaders worldwide by TIME magazine.

These distinctions reflect a remarkable trajectory that has skillfully integrated innovation, social responsibility, and a long-term vision, values that have also left a concrete mark on Curicó and Chilean wine-making.

Upon receiving this distinction, Miguel A. Torres stated: “I carry Curicó in my heart, and I feel this recognition not only as a tribute to my career, but as a symbol of the history we have written together. When I arrived in this valley, several decades ago, I never imagined we would build such a deep connection. If this were to be one of my last trips to this land, I leave with the certainty that the spirit of Curicó and the affection of its people will remain very present in my life and that of my family“.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Curicó, George Bordachar, valued the awarding of this recognition, highlighting its special significance for the commune: “As mayor and on behalf of the entire municipal council, we thank Mr. Miguel Torres Riera for his contribution to the economic and social development of Curicó. His actions make him worthy of the keys to the city, because his innovation in the wine industry was the beginning of viticultural development in Chile.”.

The delivery of the Keys to the City It recognises not only an individual journey, but also a shared history between Familia Torres and the vineyard Miguel Torres Chile, and the Curicó territory.

Today, that link is sealed and continues to project strongly into the future, as an essential part of Curicó's identity and the positioning of Chilean wine in the world.
